The purpose of publishing the book Zielonka. The Forgotten Airfield of September 1939 is to recall and commemorate the events connected with the operations of the Polish Air Force from the wartime airfield in Zielonka.
Few people know that this airfield had already been in use several years before the outbreak of the Second World War, and that in September 1939 it hosted not only the Pursuit Brigade (III/1 Fighter Wing – 111 and 112 Fighter Squadrons), but also three other units of the Air Force of Army “Modlin” (41 Reconnaissance Squadron, 53 Observation Squadron, and 152 Fighter Squadron). From here, the largest number of combat operations of any single airfield during the September 1939 campaign were carried out.
The book combines factual accounts with first-hand reports written by Polish airmen in the heat of events. These testimonies reveal much about who they were, what they felt while fighting in September 1939, and allow a deeper understanding of the extent of their sacrifice and dedication. The impact they left on the morale and hopes of victory among Poles becomes clear when reading the accounts of witnesses from Zielonka and the surrounding towns.
The publication is enriched with photographic material, some of which has never been published before.
The release of the book was initiated by the Friends of Zielonka Association, with the support of the Zielonka Municipality.
