In 1938, the USSR purchased a licence to manufacture the Douglas DC-3 passenger aircraft. As its design did not fully meet user requirements, the engineer Boris Pavlovich Lisunov adapted the aircraft to Soviet needs and production capabilities. The aircraft was designated PS-84, and by the end of 1939 production had begun at Aircraft Factory No. 84 in Khimki. In early 1941 the designation was changed to Li-2. A total of around 5,000 examples were built.
This book presents the history of the Li-2’s service in both military and civil aviation. It includes over 300 photographs – historical as well as contemporary detail shots – along with drawings from technical manuals. In addition, it features 25 specially prepared colour profiles showing the aircraft in the markings of both the Soviet Air Force and LOT Polish Airlines.
Errata: Pages 105 and 106 – see downloadable files.
